Keep Dogs Safe During Heatwaves - Percys Pet Products

The summer is on its way, and as the British weather can be unpredictable, heatwaves could turn up when you least expect them. That is why it is important to know how to look after your dog when the temperature soars to keep them safe and hydrated.

  • Sun cream

We know we have to use sun cream on our own skin when the sun is out, but did you know you should also protect your dog’s skin, especially their ears and nose?

The RSPCA recommends doing this for pooches with white or light-coloured fur, as this makes them more vulnerable to sunburn.

  • Keep them shaded

Although it is best that pets are not kept locked inside during hot days, particularly in cars where temperatures can rocket to 47C, you should also ensure your pet can easily access shade. They need to have regularly breaks from the sunlight.

When it comes to dog walks, make sure you do this when the weather is cooler, such as early in the morning or late in the evening. Don’t forget their paws will get hot on sizzling tarmac, so check the ground is not too hot by placing your hand down on the surface for five seconds.

  • Plenty of water

The Dogs Trust reminds owners to give pets plenty of fresh water throughout the day. It is also a good idea to add ice cubes to water bowls or freeze a dog toy for them to chew.

Kong dog toys in the UK that dispense treats are particularly good to freeze.
